If you are in the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa (formerly Tier 2) and you have built a strong enough track record in digital technology, you can switch to the Global Talent Visa without leaving the country. This is one of the most underused options available to tech professionals already working in the UK. The switch removes your employer tie, removes occupation restrictions, and starts the clock on a potentially shorter path to ILR.
Can you switch without leaving the UK?
Yes. You can apply for a Global Talent Visa from inside the UK while on a Skilled Worker Visa. This is a "leave to remain" application rather than an "entry clearance" application, meaning you apply through the UKVI portal and do not need to attend a visa application centre abroad.
You must apply before your current Skilled Worker Visa expires. You cannot switch if your visa has already lapsed. There is a 28-day overstay grace period in some circumstances, but do not rely on it. Apply with plenty of time remaining on your current visa.
You do not need your employer's permission to apply for a Global Talent Visa. Your employer does not need to sponsor you, be notified, or be involved in any way. This is one of the clearest advantages of the Global Talent route over routes that require employer sponsorship.
Tip: Apply for the endorsement (Stage 1) while your Skilled Worker Visa is still valid. You have 3 months from the endorsement letter to submit the Stage 2 visa application.
Why switch from Skilled Worker to Global Talent?
The Skilled Worker Visa ties you to a single employer. If you want to change jobs, your new employer must sponsor you and you must apply for a new visa. If you are made redundant, you have 60 days to find a new sponsored employer or leave the UK. The Global Talent Visa removes all of that.
On a Global Talent Visa, you can work for any employer in any role, be self-employed, run a startup, consult for multiple clients simultaneously, or take time out to build something. There are no occupation restrictions and no employer reporting requirements.
For ILR, the qualifying period on a Skilled Worker Visa is 5 years. If you switch to Global Talent and are endorsed as Exceptional Talent (MC1), your ILR qualifying period is 3 years from the date you enter on the Global Talent Visa. Switching earlier in your career can mean ILR years sooner than you would have it on the Skilled Worker route.
- No employer tie: change jobs freely
- No occupation restriction: any role
- Self-employment and startups permitted
- Potentially 3-year ILR path (vs 5 years on Skilled Worker)
Does your time on Skilled Worker count toward ILR?
No. The qualifying period for Global Talent Visa ILR starts from the date you enter the UK on your Global Talent Visa, not from when you first arrived in the UK. Time spent on a Skilled Worker Visa does not count toward the Global Talent ILR qualifying period.
This is an important distinction. If you have been in the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa for 4 years and then switch to Global Talent, your 3-year (or 5-year) ILR clock starts again from zero on your Global Talent Visa start date.
Despite this, many tech professionals find the switch worthwhile, especially earlier in their career when the employer freedom and career optionality the Global Talent Visa provides is more valuable than the ILR timeline benefit of staying on Skilled Worker.
Important: Time on your Skilled Worker Visa does NOT count toward Global Talent ILR. Your qualifying period restarts from your Global Talent Visa start date.
What do you need to qualify?
The eligibility criteria for switching are exactly the same as for applying fresh from abroad. You must meet MC1 (Exceptional Talent) or MC2 (Exceptional Promise) plus two optional criteria from OC1-OC3. Your work in the UK counts as evidence. In fact, UK-based experience is often easier to document because you have UK employer references, UK product impact, and participation in the UK tech ecosystem.
Your Skilled Worker employment history, UK-based projects, and UK tech community contributions can all be used as evidence. Reference letters from your UK employer or from UK tech leaders who know your work are among the strongest letters you can submit.
Being inside the UK does not change the evidence requirements or submission process. You still submit PDFs, a personal statement, 3 reference letters, and a CV. The process is the same. Just your biometrics appointment, if required, will be in the UK rather than at an overseas Visa Application Centre.
Timing your switch
The best time to switch is when you have a clear 12-18 months remaining on your Skilled Worker Visa, a strong evidence base, and referees who are willing to write strong letters. Applying with very little time left on your current visa creates unnecessary pressure.
If you are considering switching, start building your evidence base now. That means documenting impact metrics, identifying your referees early, and getting your personal statement started. The preparation typically takes 4-8 weeks, and Stage 1 endorsement processing takes 5-8 weeks, so factor in 3-4 months between deciding to apply and potentially receiving your Global Talent Visa.
You can remain employed and working on your Skilled Worker Visa throughout the entire application process. Your employer does not know you are applying for a different visa unless you tell them.
Switching from a Skilled Worker Visa to a Global Talent Visa is one of the most impactful career moves available to tech professionals in the UK. The freedom it provides (to change jobs, start something, consult, or simply have options) is significant. If you have been building a track record in UK digital technology and you are ready to make the case, getendorsed helps you structure and audit your application before you submit.
