UK Global Talent Visa for Startup Founders
Built something real? The Global Talent Visa recognises founder impact, not just employee track records.
Quick Answer
Startup founders qualify for the UK Global Talent Visa by evidencing impact through their company: user growth, revenue, press coverage, funding raised, and the technical innovation behind the product. Founders who built the technology themselves can also claim OC1 for technical contributions. No UK job offer is needed.
Visa Criteria for Startup Founders & Entrepreneurs
How your work maps to the Tech Nation assessment framework.
Mandatory Criterion
MC1 (Exceptional Talent) is most common for founders with a track record
You must satisfy one mandatory criterion. Most founders choose based on career stage. Exceptional Promise for those earlier in their career, Exceptional Talent for those with a documented track record.
Optional Criteria (choose 2)
Your startup product (with documented user adoption, revenue, or industry impact) is typically the anchor piece of OC2 evidence.
Press coverage in notable publications, funding from recognised VCs, accelerator participation (Y Combinator, Techstars), or awards.
If you personally built the technology (as CTO/technical co-founder), open-source codebases, patents, or published research can support OC1.

Key Facts for Startup Founders & Entrepreneurs
FAQs for Startup Founders & Entrepreneurs
Can I apply as a founder if my startup is not yet profitable?
Yes. Revenue is just one signal. Documented user growth, press coverage, credible investment, and a clear technical innovation can support a strong application even for early-stage startups. MC2 (Exceptional Promise) is specifically designed for people earlier in their trajectory.
Do I need to be the technical co-founder to qualify?
No. Business co-founders with documented commercial impact can qualify through OC2 and OC3. Technical founders additionally have OC1 routes through code, patents, or open-source contributions.
My startup failed. Can I still use it as evidence?
Yes. A failed startup can still demonstrate exceptional talent if the evidence shows significant innovation, media coverage, funding, or user adoption. What matters is the impact you created, not the final outcome.
Can I use my startup application as evidence of impact for a different employer?
The visa is individual, not company-based. If you're now employed but can document your founding work, that evidence is fully valid. You're applying on the merits of your career (past and present), not your current employment status.
